Description
Il Salone dei Rifiutati is a social cooperative with a cultural vocation, born as cultural association in 2003 in Potenza. The collective operates in the field of art, education and culture by creating installations, exhibitions, training courses, educational projects aimed at schools, teachers, operators, families and citizens of all ages.
In 2008, the Association opened the Salone dei Rifiutati, a creative workshop that became a social cooperative in 2016, which enhances the
production waste of various affiliated companies, giving new life to discarded materials and objects. The self-managed space has been
recognized by the Basilicata Region as an Environmental Education Center for Sustainability.
In 2018, consistent with these principles of exchange and interaction, the cooperative gives life to MOON, the Museum of Narrating Objects
Workshop.
The promoted and supported projects aim at weaving a socio-cultural network, increasing relationships that starts from Basilicata and now
reaches all of Italy. Our goal is to implement this network by increasing the opportunities to look at reality from another point of view, thanks to the extraordinary ability of art to make visible what is not and to let us know the world through unprecedented latitudes.
The Heavenly Table is an interactive installation which takes its inspiration from the historical and scientific text “Il Grande Orologiaio/The Great Clock-maker” by Francesco Niccolini and describes a poetic journey through Astronomy, using a long table strewn with objects
coming from the Kitchen World.
Sentimentally tied to Joseph Cornell’s boxes and Daniel Spoerri’s tableaux, this installation reinterprets the knowledge of the sky, the weather and navigation advanced through the discoveries, the attempts, the mistakes and the men involved over a period of four hundred years which affected our view of the world from 1300 to 1700. The table has always been a place of sharing, conviviality, and collective rituals.
In the light of this sense of awareness, the Heavenly Table is like the work top of a great chef, who, with a harmonious dance of tools and utensils, cooks time, lays the years and creates dishes so as to offer these to popular knowledge in a dimension where “knowledge” is also “tasty”.
The Celestial Table translates 400 years of scientific discoveries about time into a path of hands-on interactive installations. The experiences
that objects allow to have are the result of collective reflections that involve the community, from children to grandparents, from teenagers to
teachers and operators. The interactions combine the data of scientific and technological history with the emotional ones of the personal
memories that the participants have given us with their objects.
The Heavenly Table aims at awakening the spirit of the explorer rather than that of the spectator, by stimulating a willingness to bring oneself into play rather than nourish detached observation so as to offer interaction with things based on the pleasure resulting from the wonders and displacements that the most banal ordinary life is able to offer.
The Heavenly Table was conceived and created by the Cultural Association “La luna al guinzaglio” in its creative workroom “Il Salone dei Rifiutati” and is coproduced with the Superintendence for the Historical, Artistic and Ethno-anthropological Heritage.
TRAVEL TIPS
The Heavenly Table has different exploration routes:
Red path: some objects on the table are connected to the drawers by red lines. The drawers show how to light up, use and play the interactive objects.
White path: reading the words printed on the tablecloth you can explore the “satellite objects”, delimited by white lines.
Childhood of Time: it is a crossing under the table, an experience dedicated to all those wishing to discover the origin of the time (ancient calendars, mythological images etc.). And if it is difficult for you to bend, some trays-mirror are available to spy under the table.
Big Pen: the table is provided with different bar codes that allow the download of the story by Francesco Niccolini, that inspired the installation.
The App is downloadable from the websites of www.latavolaceleste.it and www.lalunaalguinzaglio.it/app.
Star Dialogues: The Heavenly Table offers the opportunity to know who are the famous table-companions of this adventure. Sitting on the chairs and sipping some rhymes with your ears, you can make friends with philosophers, astronomers and explorers of European history.
