The project participant: amaneï / Elettra Bottazzi, Paolo Carta and Niccolò Masini
Name of the project: Aeolian Amalgama
What’s the heart of your pilot in Collab 4 HySust CCI?
The Aeolian Amalgama project offers an educational opportunity for Aeolian adolescents (15-17 years old) to blend, or rather “amalgamate,” scientific and artistic methodologies while encouraging observation, experiential learning, and transversality among emerging generations. Born from a joint collaboration between amaneï, Paolo Carta, and Niccolò Masini, the project promotes observation, experiential learning, and cross-disciplinary thinking among emerging generations through thematic workshops and activities. The program integrates theoretical scientific study with hands-on artistic practices, demonstrating the advantages of merging research and production. This alternative/complementary educational opportunity emphasizes ‘learning by doing’ and intergenerational connections, sensitizing future generations to sustainable and innovative approaches within their territories. By “amalgamating” theoretical scientific study with active experiential artistic practice, the pilot within the Collab 4 HySust CCI program aims to inspire adolescents and foster a deeper understanding of complex topics. Moreover, the outcomes include the development of sustainable models for cross-community engagement, addressing climate challenges, environmental policies, and cross-cultural initiatives.
What’s something you’re really proud of achieving so far (with your project inside Collab 4 HySUST CCI)?
The Aeolian archipelago presents a distinctive and challenging backdrop to undertake and fulfill our project. The territory is marked by a fragile ecosystem due to its volcanic activity, which makes it susceptible to environmental volatility. This archipelago testifies to the delicate balance between natural forces and human habitation concerning the well-known extreme ecological concerns. In this remote and economically struggling region, the Aeolian youth face complex challenges. Aeolians, as many other similar realities around Europe, suffer from a marginalized position and limited access to educational and cultural opportunities, and their economic livelihoods depend heavily on seasonal tourism. Thanks to the joint collaboration between amaneï, local partners, associations, schools and institutions, our proposed educational empowerment addresses marginality while fostering interdisciplinary approaches. Our aim empowers future adults to overcome contemporary challenges, by stimulating critical and cross-curricular thinking. We envision a future where they understand the complexities of their environment and develop innovative solutions and concerns, particularly those related to the Climate Crisis.
Where do you see your project heading next?
The methodology proposed within Aeolian Amalgama seeks to establish a pioneering model that can be expanded to other territories, inspiring and empowering adolescents while promoting environmental sustainability across Europe. Moreover, the project serves as a model for the broader national and European artistic and cultural ecosystem, encouraging the adoption of sustainable practices and fostering collective commitment. amaneï envisions a vast network of affiliated institutions and individuals, nurturing enduring relationships and creating opportunities for future collaborations. This project represents a systemic shift in public perception, inspiring collective action for a more equitable and environmentally sustainable future.
What do you think is the most valuable thing that the Collab 4 HySUST project has brought to you?
Through the support of the Collab 4 HY Sustain CCI and relative micro-grant, we had the opportunity to establish the initial steps towards the realization of the pilot. Moreover, within the structure of our mentorship program, we are sharing the results of our process within an expanded network of possible European partner institutions. By connecting with the youth and equipping them with the knowledge and mindset needed to address climate challenges, we aim to create lasting changes in the Aeolian territory and beyond.
From your experience participating in the Collab 4 Hy Sust CCI project, what advice would you give to organizations similar to yours?
Define your own objectives in relation to the program. Don’t focus on the immediate results, rather, keep in mind your own long-run timetable and the possibilities that such a dynamic opportunity can initiate.
